On day 2 of my cultural trip, we visited Jeonbuk province. I enjoyed trying the delicious bibimbap and Jeonju’s
uniquely made Choco-pie in Jeonju Hanok Village. The village reminded me a
little of Busan’s Gamcheon village with the many individual shop vendors
displaying unique works of art and jewelry.
However, this village had a much more rich, historical Korean vibe with
its’ temple shaped roof-tops and a even a little garden with a waterfall. Even
though many of the shops weren’t open, I was grateful that we arrived there
early to explore and wander about as I was told later that the Hanok village
usually gets crazy busy during the day. Last but not least, I got to learn some
Korean drumming skills in Jeonju’s cultural experience center. Even though the
instructor didn’t communicate much in English, we all understood his point and
soon found ourselves beating rhythmically at his command. It felt we were accomplishing some sort of
group beat, however beginning it would be compared to the instructor’s master
drum skills he showcased to us at the end of the lesson.
This was my favourite part of my 2 day cultural trip in Jello-nam province. The garden was probably the best I've seen in my life. I remember thinking “is this really in Korea?” as I stepped
into the Thailand themed garden. Comparing this garden to the “famous” one back
home in Vancouver, it was better by far! There was so much variety and beauty-
not just in the different shades of flowers lining up the walkways to and from
each themed garden from America to Amsterdam to tropical plants, but it also
gave me a glimpse of gardens around the world- all conveniently packed in
Suncheon. Everything looked pristine and
magical!
Since moving to Korea, my friends and me have
always talked of visiting all the provinces at least once before our time here
is up. So, when I heard that we would be visiting 2 provinces-Jeollanam-do and
Jeonbuk I was very excited! Despite getting up at 5am to make it to departure
time, I was more than energized as the day unfolded. Our first destination was the Suncheon
filming locations that gave us a glimpse of antique movie and drama sets were
used for some of Korea’s most famous shows and films. When I saw the set for my
favorite drama “East of Eden” I thought “hey I remember this store and
housing…whoa!” It was such a nice cultural experience not only exploring
Korea’s historical town settings but also seeing in person sets from all my
favorite Korean shows.
